From time to time I have come across a CWGC listed grave where the stone makes no mention of the man's military service or cause of death so if you did not know of the CWGC record you would have no way of knowing it was a war grave.

See Beresford at Girvan Doune for an example.

If doing grave recording in a cemetery I see a male who died during the war years in the right age bracket I usually snap them in order to follow up, just in case.

I think I've found a few family ones this way, but not CWGC headstones.

I tend to do the same, then weedle out the ones who come up blank. Thank goodness for digital cameras!!!

This is a very good point. If you don't have a CWGC regsiter to refer to then these private headstones can easily be missed. Better to snap away as you say and delete what you don't need later.

By the way you might want to update your Beresford entry. James who died in the Boer War is listed on the Girvan Boer War memorial.

Cheers

This is maybe a wee bit too 'organised' for some ......

What I tend to do, is usually before I head out to a new location, I go to the Cemetery on CWGC's site, copy and paste all the names etc., onto a page which I can then re-sort to show who's in each Section and by doing searches this way, you know where everybody is.

Theoretically this method should work, but when CWGC list wrong Sections and you get exasperated walking up and down the same bit time after time only to find out later that you're in the wrong place to begin with ....... Confused Laughing

Always bear in mind though - just because it's a CWGC listed burial, there wont necessarily be a stone.

If it's the case that the deceased person's family did not wish a stone erected, then that wish still has to be respected.
